Blue Bell Creameries LP secured an investment from Texas billionaire Sid Bass—a lifeline from one of the country’s most prominent investors—amid a sweeping recall that the ice-cream maker had warned shareholders could destroy it.
Blue Bell on Tuesday said Mr. Bass, who has managed an oil-and-gas fortune for years and once was a major investor in Walt Disney Co., made a “significant” investment and became a partner in the closely held company. Terms weren’t disclosed.
The deal comes as Blue Bell, a family-run Texas company that is among the largest U.S. ice-cream makers, is trying to return its frozen desserts to stores after recalling all its products in April following a deadly listeria outbreak.
